It’s been the most talked about TV commercial in the country this week… Is the tradie in the Libs’ new election ad a phoney?
Social media has been in overdrive with #FakeTradie trending nationally and plenty of people accusing Malcolm and his mates of hiring an actor to convey their election message.
The thing is though, he is in fact a legit, full-blown, fairdunkum tradie! His name is Andrew MacRae and he’s a metal worker from Lane Cove, Sydney.
Speaking from his home yesterday, he told News Corp; “I am the real deal. I am not an actor and I am freaked out by all of this.”
He slammed the “keyboard warriors” behind the ‘Fake Tradie’ hashtag and described them as “foolish… they are crazy to push such a lie,”
MacRae also said the he wasn’t even a member of the Liberal Party and had a good old chuckle at any suggestions that his outfit was suspiciously clean in the ad.
“Mate, you can see me now where I’m tired and I’ve just come home from a long day’s work,”
“The whole thing is crazy. I’m a tradie and I work all over Sydney.”
“I’m not going to let it get to me,”
“I’ll just enjoy my five minutes of fame and get on with being the real tradie.”
His friends have found the situation hilarious but have also been worried about his wellbeing in the fallout of the controversial ad. One of his tradie mates, Domenico Coviello suggested that his performance was worthy of an Oscar gong.
“Not a bad acting performance for a tradie — hope he gets an Oscar. Hope he gets his investment property after this episode. Will have earned it. Good on him for standing up for what he believes. More people should do it,” Mr Coviello said.
“I really don’t know what the big deal about his identity is, it’s clearly written in the credits of the ad he appears in.”
10 days to go, people!
