Melbourne Festival brings Shellac, Billy Bragg, Big Freedia

The Melbourne Festival will has announced a stellar musical line-up for this year's October event, which will mark the end of Brett Sheehy's tenure as director.

Antony and the Johnsons will perform Swanlights, featuring a 44-piece orchestra at Hamer Hall; Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore also plays Hamer Hall, while (ex?) bandmate Lee Ranaldo will perform at the Hi-Fi bar; Chicago icons Shellac will play their first shows in Australia since 1993, with two gigs at the Hi-Fi (selling fast).

UK folk legend Billy Bragg will play two shows: one celebrating the legacy and 100th anniversary of the birth of Woody Guthrie, the second his own songs; Seattle hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction will team up with New Orleans—and recent Golden Plains highlight—Big Freedia & The Divas (pictured) alongside Grouse Party DJs. The curators of Melbourne’s Sugar Mountain Festival will debut Bermuda Float, an "electro-psych aquatic odyssey" featuring Puro Instinct and Melbourne’s NO ZU; Conversations with Ghosts will feature Paul Kelly teaming up with recorder virtuoso Geneveive Lacey, electronic soundscapist James Ledger and 10 ANAM musicians

The festivals film component will also look to music for inspiration: Lee Ranaldo will again perform alongside the films of Stan Brakhage, while ACMI and Greater Union will host documentaries featuring Antony and the Johnsons, Andrew Bird and celebrated photographer Anton Corbjin amongst others.

I saw Big Freedia at Meredith. I saw her two nights later at the Newtown Workers. I will be seeing her again here. There are rumours of a circular stage for 360 degree ass shaking. Too much stupid, stupid fun. Also, Swanlights looks utterly incredible.
