Dark Mofo expands program, gets nude

You might have read a little bit about our night out at the preview of the Dark Mofo festival the other week. Well if not you should have, because we are a team, you and I. And you're letting me down. And by you I specifically mean the Skywhale.

The inaugural Dark Mofo festival — the winter sister to MONA FOMA's summer brother — is weeks away from cracking the permafrost off your stroked-chin, so we thought it a good time to look at what's on offer. Especially now that the nude swim is back on.

Last week it was announced that due to concerns from the Tasmanian police, the planned Dark Mofo Nude Solstice Swim would not be going ahead. Police were apparently concerned about the size of the event, after more than 200 people signed up to take part.

But following discussions between the police and organisers, the swim is back on. The Tasmanian Minister for Police and Emergency Management, David O'Byrne, announced this week that the swim has "in-principle" agreement from Tasmania Police — a good outcome for organisers, who suggest that the icy morning swim could turn into an annual event. With air temperatures reaching an overnight low of 2.0°C just last week, my travel bag is already packed with sticks of margarine and an inflatable support vessel - let's do this.

Running from June 13 to 23 in and around Hobart, the festival combines "large-scale public art, food, music, light and noise." Musically we have performances from marquee names like the Presets, the Drones, You Am I and Martha Wainwright, as well as a host of top-tier support crew in My Disco, Zanzibar Chanel, Andee Frost, Ben Salter, Naysayer & Gilsun and a host of other folk. (Tucked into that is Satanalia, a ten-hour, sensual assault that will feature the aforementioned Drones, as well as Boris, A Dead Forest Index, Kangaroo Skull, MONO, Barbarion, The Stickmen, Harmonic 313 and more. Epic.)

Some:

Elsewhere there's a ten-day film program, a series of light-based installations and exhibitions, Walt Disney's Fantasia scored by the Tasmanain Symphony Orchestra (!), musical theatre, art, talks, walks, food, booze, and yes, our friend the Skywhale. Plus more. See the whole program and details over at darkmofo.net.au.
