Dior opens Sydney flagship storeIt has been 65 years since Christian Dior first visited Australia, but the iconic French fashion house have at last opened a flagship store on Sydney’s Castlereagh Street.
Designed in the style of a grand Parisian apartment, with over a dozen distinct rooms, the store spans four storeys and features women’s ready to wear, menswear, timepieces, accessories and fine jewellery.
At present, the store is showcasing Dior's Spring/Summer 2013 women's ready to wear collection, the first for the house by new designer Raf Simmons. Included in the store's offering are two Sydney exclusives, a pink Lady Dior handbag with leather covered charms, and a cream silk dress, printed with pink roses. There are only six of these dresses in existence and its price is available only on inquiry.
No detail was forgotten in the construction of the store, which took the better half of last year and features luxurious limestone, marble and silk carpeted floors. Curtains borrow their inspiration from couture with 'hand-stitched' style details while Swarovski-smattered flat chandeliers and 'lucky star' light fittings fill the ceilings.
Dior opened its first Australian boutique in 1999, in Sydney’s Rocks district, but the new Castlereagh flagship marks the first time Australians have been privy to the full Dior experience. Globally, the brand is moving away from small boutiques, concentrating instead on expansive retail palaces that showcase the brand’s full range of products.
Dior is by no means the only luxury brand to expand their Australian presence in recent times. The boutique sits diagonally opposite the newly renovated Chanel store, and further along Castlereagh, one runs into the glass and metal facades of Gucci and Prada, which opened as part of the Westfield Sydney development.
While traditional bricks and mortar retail in Australia is suffering, luxury spending is up. A healthy Australian economy and close proximity to Asia makes Australia an attractive opportunity for international brands.Dior will be celebrating the opening of its new store this evening with a cocktail party for 250 guests, including Christian Dior CEO Sidney Toledano and several Australian celebrities from the film, fashion and music worlds.
The Dior flagship store will be open at 65 Castlereagh St from February 1st, and its hours are:
Mon, Tues, Wed, Sat - 10am to 6.30pm
Sun - 11am - 6pm
