Harry Potter movie spin-off in the works

There hasn't been any Harry potter news of note in a long time. Once the eight film series wrapped up, things got pretty threadbare for fans.

No longer.

J.K. Rowling, author of the series, has stepped up to the plate after Hollywood announced a film based on the book Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them. Fans will recognise the title; it's a textbook from the Hogwart’s curriculum, but it's also an actual book (a companion piece of sorts) published by Rowling.

The film will apparently follow the exploits of the books author, Newt Scarmander, and will be set seventy years before the books/films, apparently in New York City. So why is Rowling involved? Apparently, she heard about the project and didn't want someone else working on the script. So she's writing it herself.

This, incidentally, is a huge deal on two levels. First off, it will be (for all intents and purposes) a brand new Harry Potter story, set within the universe we know and love. Secondly, Rowling hasn't ever written a film. Meaning it could suck.

But at this point, we should all be revelling in this insane, brazen news; soon enough we'll all once again dip into the wizarding world crafted by J.K. Rowling. We'll bring you more news when it crops up!
