Guess which Star Wars characters might be getting spin-offs?
If you sided with the camp that assumed, when news of Disney's buying Lucasfilm broke, that the house of Mouse would actually turn the Star Wars franchise into a viable property - much like they have with Marvel movies - then give yourselves a pat on the back.
It looks as though Disney are not only firing up the Star Wars universe as the money-spinner to end all money-spinners (after Lucas more or less turned everyone in our universe off the very idea of it, cough cough Jabba walking cough cough), but they're doing it in such a way that isn't going to suck completely.
First, they announced that the first of the new films - sequels to the original trilogy - would be written by Michael Arndt and directed by J.J. Abrams, which nearly everybody agrees is a terrific idea.
Now, it looks as though there'll be two standalone movies - currently being written by Star Wars royalty in the form of Lawrence Kasdan (oh yeah and Simon Kinberg) - that focus on the early days of everyone's favourite bounty hunter and Mandalorian: Han Solo, and Boba Fett.
Reports Entertainment Weekly, "The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.
"The Boba Fett film would take place either between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Jedi, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit. Exactly who would play him isn’t much of a complication – in the original trilogy, he never took off his helmet. And in the prequels, we learned he was the son of the original stormtrooper clone, played by Temuera Morrison, who’s still the right age for the part if his services were required."
There's been no comment as yet by Disney and/or Lucasfilm, but word on the street seems to be that the rumours are pretty legit.
If that's true, may the movies be as thrilling as this person's tattoo(s):
We can only hope.
