Patti Smith wants Kristen Stewart and R Patz to star in her biopic

Patti Smith’s amazing memoir Just Kids is being turned into a movie. The book focuses on Patti Smith’s coming of age, and her relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe. With a screenplay penned by John Logan, the man behind Gladiator and the perfectly acceptable adaptation of Sweeney Todd, the film looks promising so far. Logan is a close friend of Smith’s, and to date the project has been a collaborative one.

Patti Smith even has a casting suggestion for the movie. She recently told EW “I remember the very first time I saw Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson together, when they were younger, and I thought, ‘Those two kids could have easily played us when they were first starting.” She added: “There’s something in his eyes. And Robert [Mapplethorpe] was also a bit shy, and a bit stoic. Kristen has a very special quality. She’s not conventionally beautiful, but very charismatic.”

Kristen Stewart has already done both the beat-era lover thing in On The Road and the rockstar thing with The Runaways, while Pattinson’s work with David Cronenberg suggests he too is keen to distance himself from his teen idol rep.

If it can’t be Kristen, Smith is also a big fan of Mia Wasikowska and Saoirse Ronan, although neither of them could pull of that signature white shirt quite like Stewart.

That being said, Patti Smith is well aware that the movie would probably work better with a pair of new faces in the lead roles. “Robert and I were very young. We were 20. We were unknowns, and I think it should be unknowns in the film, and young.”
