We have our new hero.
Actor Wentworth Miller of Prison Break and DC Legends of Tomorrow fame, has posted a powerful message against a hurtful meme doing the rounds, body-shaming the actors recent weight change.
Miller describes his history of depression and thoughts of suicide in the post on Facebook, referencing a meme posted by The Lad Bible comparing Miller’s body shape in his prime state of fitness to a picture captured in 2010.
“Today I found myself the subject of an Internet meme. Not for the first time. In 2010, semi-retired from acting, I was keeping a low-profile for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I was suicidal. This is a subject I’ve since written about, spoken about, shared about. But at the time I suffered in silence. As so many do,” he goes on.
“In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking everywhere for relief/comfort/distraction. And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to.”
The post has been shared over 200 thousand times, with hundreds of people finding solace in Miller’s story, posting their own personal struggles with mental illness. It is particularly poignant as a rare instance of a man speaking out against unreachable body image standards that men the world over struggle daily to emulate.
You have done us all proud, mate!
